This afternoon I went to a family gathering where chili and cornbread was served. It was mostly family present—someone else’s family, not mine—and it was interesting to watch the workings of an extended one that was not my own. They were all very nice; I found myself marveling at how frictionlessly they seemed to interact. That ease was due mostly to familiarity and maybe resignation, the kind...

The Christmas Spirit
I’m at JFK and it is, as predicted, a mad house. This time I’m really feeling for people with young kids. Deconstructing the strollers, battling the little attention spans and fits of kid crankiness, and the angry stares in the security line due to things going a modicrum more slowly than they usually go: it’s almost too much to ask of myself, let alone someone a fraction my age....

I talked to them for a couple minutes. I remember trying to affect...

Snow!
It’s snowing again outside! Luckily I put on my winter coat, the one that sheathes my sofa, when I took the trash out, so it was NBD.
On resignation
I have this unpleasant and sometimes embarrassing but otherwise not life-endangering skin condition. This morning, as I was lying here in the freezing cold and assessing the scope of this most recent flare-up, I decided to resign myself to it, to the skin condition. I get prescriptions from my doctor and the medicine—whatever it is, I can’t keep track of the names or what they’re made...

We can talk for hours about the way people danced. It is a wonderful subject....
– This interview with Andrew Holleran is wonderful, the part that’s available online at least.
